Mrs Boobs

My art professor gave us projects since it was our first semester ever in a ceramics classroom. Of course I felt adventurous and started sketching ideas I had for what I wanted to make. I woke up the next morning and found myself loving a series of little creature people. Originally I sketched them as sitting on little eggs which represented the future as if the crazy person on top was hatching it’s version of a new world. Who knows really. You can still see the little egg-type thing on Mrs. Boobs but it isn’t as exaggerated as I originally planned. As I said before, this was handbuilt and creating the egg was actually the hardest part for me.

My prof ended up loving my ideas and gave me a free pass to do whatever I wanted this semester!

I was so scared when I put her in the Raku kiln because I used Beemix clay. Beemix isn’t very gritty which I don’t think works well with the high temperature changes involved in Raku firing. I was so so sooo happy when I opened the kiln and pulled her out still in one piece (respectfully to the head and body seperate) and even more happy when I opened the trashcan lid and found very minimal cracking. The cracking actually works to my advantage with this piece.

The lowfire glazes worked too. I didn’t want a lot of copperness to come through but I did want some and I think the perfect amount showed. I love the amount of carbon that the clay absorbed. It could be more black but I am still happy.

I would love to hear everyone’s thoughts and critiques on this piece as I put a lot of time and effort into this.

PS- Did anyone watch Hero’s tonight? OMG! Best episode yet this season! Oh, how I love this show!
